Picturing Asian women

Artist's Statement

Hi, I am Hira Kazmi from a small village in Pakistan. In 2019, I completed my MS in Human Genetics, attended international conferences, presented my work in the international exhibition at TCC McKeon Centre for Creativity, Tulsa, USA, Rooftop art centre, UK and met people from different background and discussed about all the issues. That was the time I realized that women empowerment is a global issue and I should voice it. I turned that pretence into art and art has its own language. One of my illustration is included in a book “Plague 2020”. In the last few years, I taught myself Illustrations to give physical form from an Asian woman’s perspective, paying particular attention to our emotional landscapes - to gestureus, people and feelings left unsaid such as mental illness and women rights. I am just another brown girl trying to convince this society that freedom of thoughts and speech matters.

cf. Manet,  Olympia
Looking at Kazmi's Picturing Asian women, one can't help but be absolutely struck by the power and poise manifested in the subject. The viewer locks eyes with the subject's, following down the forearm, where her power is almost palpable even to her fingertips. The reclamation of power prominent in Kazmi's piece reminded me very much of Manet's Olympia. Challenging most Academic Art from his time, Manet depicts an actual woman (instead of Venus) to lift the "veil of mythology" from prostitutes. The modeling and harsh outlining reminds the viewer that the art is purely 2D, something that the viewer gazes at instead of living within. Additionally, the subject's confrontational visage and tightly clamped hand differs significantly from most reclining female nudes of Manet's time. The subject reclaims her power by communicating to the viewer that her work is purely transactional and that she holds the same power and respect for herself as any other real person. Manet's work was iconic for the Realism period in giving power to the ordinary person.
